Women who were raped take to Twitter to explain why they didn’t report it
Because I was ashamed.
Because I was a child and had to trust my dad.
Because no one would have believed me.
These phrases have been taking Twitter by storm in the wake of the unfolding scandal involving Jian Ghomeshi, the embattled former CBC star tarnished by allegations of sexual assault.
Much of the conversation sparked by the allegations has revolved around the reporting of cases of rape and sexual assault by women who live in fear of being victimized.
Using the hashtag #BeenRapedNeverReported, several women have detailed feelings of shame and powerlessness before the law for reasons they did not denounce their attackers. Others feared that no one would have believed them.
Reported because a friend encouraged me; the whole process left me feeling like it was all in my head and wishing I had stayed silent.
